With a keen eye on the County's history and heritage the Clare Roots Society is placing emphasis on transcribing parish records so as to ensure their availability free of charge in the public domain.

Ennis parish records

In the Autumn of 2009 the Clare Roots Society undertook the work of digitally recording the 19th century Birth & Marriage Parish Indexes for Ennis Parish. Ennis Parish records began in 1837 (marriages) and 1841 (baptisms).

The Marriage records were transcribed by the Clare Roots Diaspora Group in Australia / Tasmania of Chris Goopy, David Kenny, Barry O'Shea, Anne Whitford, Frances Hudson, Stephen Richards, Kay Johansen Clarke, Ellen Crehan, Owen Goulding and Lorraine O'Brien. The Baptismal Records were transcribed by our volunteer team in Ennis of Fíona de Buitléir, Mary & Gerry McMahon, Karen Moore, Jennifer Morgan, and Regina Mullins.

May 2010 saw the launch of the Index Books for Ennis Parish (Drumcliff) online where they can be viewed for free. The records can be found on line at the Ennis Parish website at: www.ennisparish.com The records contain over 12,500 Baptismal entries and 2,960 Marriage entries.

In recognition of those who took part in the Ennis transcription project copy disks were presented to all the Ennis participants. This same presentation disk has been distributed to Diaspora members who took part in the project.

The event coincided with the re-installation of the original baptismal font that had been in use in the Cathedral from 1843 to 1912. It was in this font that all of the baptisms now gone online took place. It was particularly appropriate that the two events took place on the same evening and added greatly to the sense of history of both achievements.

Tubber (Kilkeedy) parish records

In 2010 the 2067 available baptism records of the parish of Tubber (Kilkeedy) were transcribed by Paddy Casey and Diane Culhane. Records were available from 1833-1881 (with some gaps). The transcriptions can be seen on the Clare County Library website at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/don_tran/bmd/baptism_records_tubber.htm
